Make Your Memorial Day Memorable

This coming Memorial Day weekend, you may not be able to go all-out as you have in the past, but you can still have quite the picnic with your family. Doing something special ensures that your family won’t remember this year as the year without the annual neighborhood BBQ but rather, as the year that you celebrated together as a family in your own way.

The Scene – Memorial Day

For your mini Memorial Day celebration, you’ll need a dedicated space. A picnic table or an outdoor patio set is perfect. Having a tablecloth is your choice but if you do decide to go with one, we recommend a nice red or blue to show your patriotism. Next up, some flowers! Not only will they make the space smell good, but they’ll look beautiful as well. There are a few red, white, and blue flowers that work well for Memorial Day celebrations.

  • Hydrangeas: Symbolizing perseverance (blue)
  • White or Red Roses: Symbolizing purity (white) or love (red)
  • Daisies: Symbolizing innocence (white)
  • Red Carnations: Symbolizing admiration (red)

The Selection

The best part of any summer celebration is the food. Leave the traditional hamburgers, hotdogs, and chips behind this year and bring in some new family favorites. For the main dish, we recommend fried chicken sandwiches from the Food Network. These sandwiches take classic fried chicken and coleslaw and create a sweet and salty concoction that the whole family is sure to enjoy.

Next, you’ll need some sides to go with your sandwiches. Try out this non-traditional picnic potato salad that can be served cold or warm! The secret to this twist on a classic? Pesto! If you’re looking to kick up the heat a bit, try this cajun macaroni salad from the Food Network.

The Sips

It’s not a picnic without some tasty drinks! For the intro to summer, you can’t go wrong with watermelon sangria. For this, you’ll need:

  • 1 Large watermelon
  • 1 (750-ml) bottle white wine, chilled
  • 2 c. white rum
  • 1 c. seltzer
  • 1/3 c. lime juice (from about 6 limes)
  • 2 limes, thinly sliced
  • 2 c. assorted fresh or frozen fruit, such as pineapple, blueberries, and strawberries

First, you’ll need to cut the top off of the watermelon and scoop all of the watermelon into a blender. After blending until smooth, add all ingredients except the fruit. Once you’ve stirred everything together, add the fruit and let chill for 2 hours before serving.

Another American classic is sweet tea so why not put a little twist on it to fit your non-traditional celebration? For this bourbon peach iced tea, you’ll need:

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 2 ounces peach preserves
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • Dash of Aperol
  • Sweet tea, to top
  • A sprig of thyme, to garnish
  • Lemon round, to garnish

All you need to do is mix the bourbon, peach preserves, lemon juice, and Aperol and then add ice, sweet tea, and finally garnish with thyme and lemon.
